and means testing and medicare. those are the things that house speaker boehner and president obama talked about in july of 2011. that is going on behind the scenes. that's the sticking issue and so on the debt ceiling. if president obama wants them to give on taxes, he must give on that. if he doesn't, we will go over the cliff and he is looking at a bigger fight in january over the debt ceiling. everyone is focused on the tax issue, but the real focus is what is in exchange for a debt ceiling increase. is it substantial medicare reform? >> i don't agree that the press is not talking about it. we know that is the big battle ahead. i think that part of the confusion and your point, all of these republicans, both those that are elect and control the radio airwaves have all said we are going to see the tax rate for the wealthiest americans go up. for some reason, we can't or we won't any time soon see speaker boehner get before a microphone and say we know this is part of the deal. to that point, what do you make of the negotiations. at least the finger points and i'm not doing this and you

to the democratic party and became the 60th vote on obama care. so that worked out well for demint. but demint does rather this being in the minority thing so much that he wants to seven out the rest of his term in the minority. when you're a senator and you even begin talking to another employer about leaving the senate, you have to file this paper with the senate office of public records. they do that so before a big vote on, say, an energy bill that will make oil companies really rich, you can't go to a big oil company and say, hey, don't you think i'd make a good executive vice president who doesn't do anything but makes a ton of money for not doing it? but makes way less money than you'll make if this bill i'm going to be voting on passes? we want to know that kind of thing if it's happening. so you have to file this paper and demint filed his paper only yesterday. according to him, these negotiations began and ended in 24 hours. that is very decisive for leaving the u.s. senate. and if it is true then it's really looking like the heritage foundation and jim demint saw an opportunity in the co

in the streets of egypt today during a phone conversation, president obama told president mohamed morsi that the violence there is unacceptable. at least six people have been killed as morsi supporters and opponents fought outside of the presidential palace. opponents marched on the palace last night calling on morsi to step down. but in a speech to the nation he refused to compromise. holly williams is in cairo. holly, good morning to you. what's the latest there? >> reporter: some people hope that after days of protest and bloodshed president morsi would make a major concession when he addressed the nation but he didn't do that. his opponents want to have him immediately give up all of the sweeping new powers that he gave himself two weeks ago and postpone a referendum on egypt's new constitution which is due to take place in over a week. critics say the constitution doesn't protect the rights of all egyptians. president morsi didn't do either of those thing. instead he offered to give up just one of his new powers, a vaguely worded right to take any necessary measures to protect the
